A focal area of three windows greets visitors upon entering the library and highlights a central corridor in the building. An artist will be commissioned to design glass art for these windows that honors the natural exterior setting and complements the architecture and light of the library. Artist may consider a variety of glass art methods including treatment to the existing
windows, framed glass art mounted within the window frames, or other permanent applications. The library will commission an artist or team to create a dynamic mural or lightweight wall relief to enliven the space and provide a focal point for visitors. All mediums will be considered, although the final project will need to take into account the minimal structural integrity of the wall and the existing lighting. The dimensions of the art space on the wall are approximately 10 feet high by 30 feet long. But when I was wandering around the Walker Art Center at the last Free First Saturday, it wasn't at the top of my mind. In fact, I had all but forgotten about it.

Then I by chance walked into this room. Wow! A visual explosion! An elixir for the winter!

Benches & Binoculars features art floor to ceiling in a two-floor gallery. The art is made up of about 90 pieces of Walker's collection. The variety of sizes and styles draws you in. But so does picking up a pair of binoculars and taking a closer look. Have you ever seen an Edward Hopper painting that way before?

Benches & Binoculars runs through August 15.

Get more info.

Elmyr de Hory, Artist and Faker

Coming to the Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus

Elmyr de Hory, Portrait of a Woman (in the style of Modigliani), 1974, oil on canvas, 21 x 15 inches collection of Mark Forgy

The show "Elmyr de Hory, Artist and Faker" features works by one of the most notorious art fakers of modern times, Elmyr de Hory, who is believed to have created hundreds of fakes of modern masters such as Henri Matisse or Amedeo Modigliani that were accepted into museums and prominent collections in the U.S. and abroad. Mark Forgy, who formed a close friendship with de Hory in the final years of his life, will lend works that the artist gave or bequeathed to him. What began as a neighborhood art sale just down the block from what is now Calhoun Square, has now developed into a nationally recognized event. Hosting 360 artists, the Uptown Art Fair caters to tourists, art enthusiasts, artists, and festival-goers from around the country, and is the major fundraiser for the Uptown Association.

The Uptown Art Fair annually selects a piece of art to commemorate the event. The work is transformed into a poster unveiled prior to the fair and incorporated into promotional materials and merchandise available to the over 375,000 fair attendees. Being named the Uptown Art Fair Commemorative Artist is a coveted honor accompanied by recognition from the public and abundant media exposure.

For the second year in a row, the Uptown Art Fair Steering Committee is hosting a contest to select the Uptown Art Fair commemorative artwork. Artists must create a piece interpreting this year’s theme- “Urban Experiences.” The commemorative print artist is required to tender all ownership and copyrights of the selected image to the Uptown Association.

For complete contest rules and official application, please visit www.uptownminneapolis.com.

New Grant Opportunities Now Available

Forecast is excited to announce three additional grant opportunities for residents living in the counties associated with the East Central Regional Arts Council, the Central MN Arts Board, and the Southwest MN Arts and Humanities Council.

These new opportunities join the established Public Project grants and Research and Development grants (both of which are open to applicants statewide).

For more information please visit the grants page of the Forecast Public Art website (http://www.forecastpublicart.org/grants-program-info.php)
and attend one of these upcoming workshops either in the Twin Cities or in your region!

• Wednesday, January 6 – 6:30-8:30pm – at Bedlam Theater in Minneapolis
• Thursday, January 7 – 6:30-8:30pm – Location TBA
• Saturday, January 9 – 1:00-3:00pm – at Homewood Studios in North Minneapolis
• Tuesday, January 12 – 6:30-8:30pm – at Springboard for the Arts in St. Paul
• Wednesday January 13 – 6:30-8:30pm – at the Paramount in St. Cloud
• Wednesday January 13 – 6:30-8:30pm – at SMAHC office in Marshall

Please RSVP to melinda@forecastpublicart.org if you plan to attend a workshop to reserve your spot.

The deadline for all grants is February 6th!

Please feel free to contact Melinda if you have specific questions about these funding opportunities.
